Welcome!

Welcome to Locke Genealogy.

Here I will trace the origins of the Locke name as people came to America in the 1600’s and bring you up to the present day for the descendants of William Locke of Woburn, MA who arrived on the ship Planter in 1635.

I will also feature other family lines such as Entress and Dustin that have interesting historical stories to tell about our ancestors.

Introduction to Genealogy

Everyone’s genealogy is sometimes difficult to prove. Research deals with wrong spellings, and sometimes wrong information that someone put in a page or book. All information must be backed up from primary sources like birth certificates, town, state, and federal census documents. If you have no primary source, then you have no proof and the information you get from a secondary source like a town history may not be accurate. When you are finding information from before 1800, you may only have a town history. If you are related back then with an Indian tribe, many records were destroyed.

For those of us who have this as a hobby, it is work, but it is also a lot of fun. The “How to do it” tab is a good starting point.

If you want to use a computer program that was written to help you, there are several available on the internet. I suggest these two…

My Heritage Family Tree Builder, has a free version and will allow you publish to their site for free if you have less than 250 names in your “tree.” The version on your computer is free and there is no limit to the number of names. If you want to search their available databases, it is not free, but it allows automatic updating of your tree when you find something new.

Ancestry.com is advertised on TV and elsewhere and is a powerful but not free program which will allow you to search many databases on the internet and automatically add information to your genealogy tree.

Both of these programs allow you to add photos and they will print out the completed forms for family members to share and update for you.

There are other programs available. Search for them on Google, but these two are the best I have found.

Remember, it is an interesting hobby, and it is FUN!!!
